Advent 2014 – Week 2 Day 2

1In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth…31 And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. ~ Genesis 1:1-31
Have you ever been overwhelmed by being inside your head too much? Of course, we all have. Both “thinker” types and “feeler” types struggle to make sense of the world around us. Seemingly simple things become complex as we dig deeply and uncover layers of function and discover previously unseen activity. On the other hand, today's society wants to marginalize and minimize God, to say He doesn't care about the details, but rather credit Fate or randomness, or place the crown of Knowledge/ Authority/Judgment/Creativity/etc. on the head of Humanity. Yesterday, human thinking believed Earth was flat and that the other planets rotated around it. We KNEW that there were the four elements - Air, Water, Fire, Earth. Later we were CERTAIN that the atom was the smallest unit of matter. Eggs were unhealthy for us. Today, we can see the elegance of not only a beautifully organized solar system, but our universe and galaxies far beyond our own. Today we can see smaller items than we'd ever conceived. And eggs? Well, that depends on whom you ask. But we – the thinkers AND the feelers – can rest and take comfort that the God of the Bible is a God of order and control. In the creation story, would it make sense that fish be created before water? Or plants and trees before land? Or animals before the vegetation? Of course not. What is both beautifully creative and thoughtfully organized for His creation is HOW God chose to create. He created our space. He created our days and nights. He created our environment. He created our animals. And then He created US. It's “creative” (or artistic, if you will), but it's not chaotic. It's orderly. It's deliberate. In the magnitude of how BIG God's creation effort seems, it still covers every detail. Including Himself. In the first chapter of John, we see specifically from the very beginning that God was providing not only our physical needs, but Himself to us: “In the beginning was the Word [Jesus], and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God.” From the creation of our earth to the creation of His plan to rescue us, nothing was an accident. Nothing was left to chance. Nothing was missed. We might not understand every detail, every outcome, every situation or even if eggs are good for us... but God knows. It's comforting that we don't have to be God. We can trust that He didn't just sling dirt and animals around, but carefully and thoughtfully designed and delivered every detail. Our pursuit of knowledge and our joy in creating are not in conflict or competition with God, but rather they enable us to understand Him more fully!
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.~ John 1:1-5
